Known for its dramatic ocean views, lush rainforests, and quaint coastal towns, this historic road spans approximately 150 miles from Torquay to Allansford. Let’s take a closer look.

Torquay to Lorne: Surf, Sand, and Sun

The journey begins at Torquay, known as the surfing capital of Australia. This segment of the road offers sweeping views of the Southern Ocean. It also passes by famous surf beaches like Bells Beach and Jan Juc.

Lorne to Apollo Bay: Rainforests and Rugged Coastlines

Continuing on from Lorne, the road winds through the lush Otway National Park. The area is rich in rainforests, waterfalls, and rivers. This stretch is particularly breathtaking as the road carves through ancient ferns and towering eucalypts before returning to the coast.

Apollo Bay to Port Campbell: The Shipwreck Coast

Lastly, we come to arguably the most dramatic portion of the Great Ocean Road. The drive from Apollo Bay to Port Campbell is famous for its rugged cliffs and deep valleys known as the Shipwreck Coast. Here you’ll find the Twelve Apostles, a collection of massive limestone stacks that rise majestically from the ocean.

The picturesque collection of limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles is one of Australia’s top natural wonders, but there are many equally scenic spots located in its close proximity. If you’re taking a ride down the Great Ocean Road, here are three nearby attractions that you should check out next.

Loch Ard Gorge

Located three minutes’ drive west of the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge is one of Port Campbell National Park’s most stunning spots. It will rock your world with its natural rock formations, brash orange beaches, and beautiful views that stretch out for miles.

London Arch

London Arch aka London Bridge is another fascinating rock formation that you should check out while exploring the Great Ocean Road. The offshore natural arch was connected to land by another arch until it collapsed unexpectedly, creating an even more scenic sight.

The Grotto

Located in close proximity to London Arch, the Grotto is another scenic spot that put Port Campbell National Park on the map. This hollowed-out cave formation is a huge hit with photographers because it comes with a paved pathway leading to the cliffs and offers amazing sea views.
