Shared between the countries of Argentina and Chile, Patagonia encompasses a variety of natural landscapes, from the glaciers and snow of the Andes Mountains to the deserts and grasslands located in the rain shadow of the massive peaks.

Spanish settlers that arrived in the region in the 16th century found most of Patagonia too rough to inhabit and unsuitable for their cities and towns. This is because of the cold, lack of rain, and mountains that generally define the area.

Most people know about the Andes Mountains’ beautiful peaks and towns such as Bariloche, but there is also plenty to discover in Patagonia’s grasslands and more southerly regions.

Trekking and hiking are common in the Patagonian grasslands. Many travelers traverse the area, observing the strange habitat and the interesting flora and fauna of the region. The Torres del Paine National Park and El Chalten are two recommended areas to hike and observe Patagonia’s nature.

Finally, another gem of Patagonia is Tierra del Fuego. In the far south of the region, a cold and volcanic-influenced area dominated by glaciers and snow offers visitors a different panorama of South America.

Patagonia is a must-visit for any nature lover. It makes more an unforgettable journey.
