While the era of colonization left a lot of painful scars in Central America, what is undeniable is that a wealth of architectural treasures remain behind from this period of Spanish rule in the region. Still today, some of the cities and towns built hundreds of years ago during this time stand.

Check out these three beautiful colonial cities in Central America for a taste of a time long gone.

Granada, Nicaragua

On the shores of Lake Nicaragua sits Granada, a small city of just over 100,000 people that is often considered the country’s most beautiful municipality. The dramatic orange and yellow Granada Cathedral towers above colorful buildings in the city’s old town, showing off the city’s beauty.

Antigua, Guatemala

In the volcanic mountainous region of southern Guatemala stands Antigua, the country’s best-preserved colonial town. The 17th-century Santa Catalina archway, as well as the city’s numerous religious buildings, have all been preserved immaculately despite earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Leon, Nicaragua

Leon’s colonial area might not be as big as Antigua and Granada’s, but its centerpiece, the dramatic Assumption Cathedral, is worth the trip alone. Built in the late 1700s, this is one of the best still-standing examples of colonial baroque architecture.
