For those of us who love visiting and seeing castles, there is no doubt that Germany is a great option for exploring these old, impressive buildings.

While there are plenty of these to see throughout the German territory, one of the best ones to anyone who likes castles or finds themself in the area is Wartburg, located in Eisenach, Thuringia.

Located in the middle of the country and in a mountainous region known as the Thuringian Forest, the Wartburg was constructed at the end of the 11th century and still stands to this day.

Located on top of a promenade that towers 1,350 feet above the town in which it is located, this impressive structure was originally built as a home and a territorial marker by the Thuringian Count of Schauenburg, Louis the Springer.

The noble, Romanesque building served as an imposing location for kings and queens to live and important meetings to be held under several different kingdoms and administrations. One of the building’s most interesting stories was how it served as a refuge for Martin Luther in the 1500s as he tried to escape persecution from Catholics and translated the Bible to German.

The castle, its towers, and its gorgeous great hall can now be visited by tourists who marvel at this fascinating site and its incredible history. Be sure to visit if you get the chance!
