Game of Thrones was arguably the 2010s most popular television series, as the small screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series transported viewers to mystical lands full of kings, knights, dragons, and ghosts.

While the series takes place in a fictional world, it was shot here on planet Earth with cities around the globe serving as the backdrop for the series creators’ interpretation of Westeros. Fans of the series should add these three cities to their must-visit list due to their role in GOT.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The fictional city of King’s Landing was brought to life in the series in the coastal Croatian city of Dubrovnik. The city’s walled and fortified old town was used by the series’ creators to represent a seaside city that served as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

Essaouira, Morocco

An easy day trip away from Marrakech on Morocco’s Atlantic coast is the city of Essaouira, which served as the filming location in Game of Thrones’ Season 3, Episode 4 visit to Astapor in which Daenerys Targaryen liberates the city.

Girona, Spain

Another short day trip away from the more popular city of Barcelona is Girona, which was a big player in Season 6 of the series. Here, the city was transformed into the wealthy city of Braavos in a number of scenes that will instantly be recognizable to fans of the series.

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular television programs of the past decade. This HBO program transported viewers to the magical worlds of Westeros and Essos, telling stories of medieval realism through the actions of memorable characters.

While the worlds in which this story took place might seem computer-generated, most of them were shot in real places. Spain has a huge concentration of filming sites for the series, so let’s take a look at some of the most memorable that you can visit.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet off of the northern coast of the Basque Country, is a dramatic hilltop chapel that was transformed into Dragonstone, the birthplace of Daenerys Targaryen. This magical place is only a short drive away from the region’s largest city, Bilbao.

Real Alcazar de Sevilla

The Water Gardens of Dorne looked like something straight out of the Arabian Peninsula when it appeared in Season 5 of the series, but this scene was actually shot in the Real Alcazar in the southern Spanish city of Seville. This Moorish palace dates back to the 10th century and can still be visited in all of its splendor.

Las Bardenas Reales

Northeastern Spain’s desert-like region of Las Bardenas Reales, located in the province of Navarre, in a remote area, feature dramatic natural sandstone arches and formations. For the series, this dreamlike landscape stood in for the Dothraki Sea, and you can take a hike and feel like you’re in Essos if you visit this desert region.

A lot of thought went into choosing the settings where Game of Thrones would be filmed. Many of the most memorable shots from the series were filmed in Iceland and you can visit these destinations in real life if you want to prove yourself to be the rightful superfan of the Iron Throne.

Thingvellir National Park

Although the gate itself was edited in, this rocky national park in Iceland is where the “Bloody Gate” scenes were filmed.

Kirkjufell

North of the wall is an arrowhead shaped mountain. This is filmed off the north coast of Iceland and to be honest, it is even more breathtaking in real life than it is on the show.

Hengill

This is the scenic spot where that epic showdown between Brienne of Tarth and The Hound went down.

Stakkholtsgja

The climactic attack on the men who ventured north of The Wall in season seven was shot at Stakkholtsgja in Iceland.
