Game of Thrones was arguably the 2010s most popular television series, as the small screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series transported viewers to mystical lands full of kings, knights, dragons, and ghosts.

While the series takes place in a fictional world, it was shot here on planet Earth with cities around the globe serving as the backdrop for the series creators’ interpretation of Westeros. Fans of the series should add these three cities to their must-visit list due to their role in GOT.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The fictional city of King’s Landing was brought to life in the series in the coastal Croatian city of Dubrovnik. The city’s walled and fortified old town was used by the series’ creators to represent a seaside city that served as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

Essaouira, Morocco

An easy day trip away from Marrakech on Morocco’s Atlantic coast is the city of Essaouira, which served as the filming location in Game of Thrones’ Season 3, Episode 4 visit to Astapor in which Daenerys Targaryen liberates the city.

Girona, Spain

Another short day trip away from the more popular city of Barcelona is Girona, which was a big player in Season 6 of the series. Here, the city was transformed into the wealthy city of Braavos in a number of scenes that will instantly be recognizable to fans of the series.
