The castle has a fascinating history and was the residence of the Sheriff of Nottingham, as well as an important site of battle during the English Civil War. The oldest pub in Britain, ‘Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem’ is also nearby and well worth a visit, the interior of the pub is built into the caves underneath the castle.
Sherwood Forest is the home of the legend of Robin Hood and used to cover an enormous expanse of Nottinghamshire. Though it has been diminished by woodland clearance in the past few centuries, it is still a forest of great significance, being home to some of the most ancient woodland in the UK. Not least is the Major Oak, which is estimated to be over 1,000 years old.
This country estate is placed right on the edge of Nottingham and has been used as a location for many films, notably as Wayne Manor in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. With over 500 acres of parkland to explore and regular art and history exhibitions in the Hall, Wollaton has lots to offer for all the family.
