]]>Stanley Kubrick’s chilling horror classic is set in the Timberline Lodge in the Oregon mountains. Approaching this domineering structure brings to mind the movie’s thrills and chills and leaves you feeling a certain affinity with the trapped characters.
This famous historical movie recounting the story of William Wallace is set almost entirely in Scotland. You can visit the rugged landscapes and haunting scenery of the film around Loch Leven and Glen Coe in the highlands.
One of the most successful trilogies in movie history, the Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand. Epic landscapes were used all over the country, many of which are almost inaccessible. But the top places to visit are Tongariro National Park (with its three volcanoes) providing the setting for Mordor, the Southern Alps which were the misty mountains, and Alexander Farm as the Shire.

]]>The rocky coastline at the beginning of the film, which is the setting of the fictional Shutter Island, is actually Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor. It is just south of the city and one of the largest islands in the harbor. The landing pier is the northeast coast where the remains of Fort Andrews can be seen.
The main building and complex of the “Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane” in the movie is actually a real abandoned mental hospital right outside Boston. Located in Medfield, 20 miles southwest of Boston, this mental hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and was fully functioning until 2003.
For those who like eerie places, you can visit every day from 6 am to 6 pm. While it is much scarier to visit at night, be careful not to trespass after dark- they are very strict about this rule! While there were a couple of props added for the filming, the complex looks exactly like it does in the movie.
Wilson Mountain Reservation, a 213-acre reservation between Medfield and Boston, is the sight of another famous section of the movie. These are the woods where Teddy and Chuck are caught in the storm as the hurricane hit the island.

The Jumanji films take place in the tropical jungle of Hawaii, Kualoa Ranch. In the remake, the cast head to Papaikou Falls in one exhilarating scene.
The Amazon jungle in the Indiana Jones classic belongs to the beautiful landscapes of the Huleia River in Kaua’i.
In the second film of the franchise, the characters return for another battle in a terrifying yet beautiful setting. The stunning lake and ominous jungle are both real-life locations in Hawaii.
Although much of the original was shot in California, the remake took the actors to Maui along with many other locations.
