Bison, otherwise known as buffalo in the States and Canada, are an ancient creature venerated by early humans around 350,000 years ago. One of the oldest known cave paintings at Lascaux depicts some grazing bison. Fortunately, you can still enjoy their majestic form in North America today. Here are some of the best locations to see wild bison in the United States.

Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota

This tremendous national park is not only the location of one of the most complex, sprawling and longest cave systems in the world, but is also home to a majestic herd of 240-400 bison. Come to the park and see them roaming over the rolling prairies.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

After being reintroduced to the park in 1956, you can now see a herd of up to 400 bison when driving through the park’s roads.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

This is the only location in the United States where Bison have lived uninterruptedly since prehistory. These are some of the only Bison in America that don’t have cattle genes and some Native American tribes revere them as ancestors of the ancient Bison that used to roam the lands.
