Hiking in the fall can be the best time to get away, as the trails are emptier and the forests transform into fiery tones. However, the cooler temperatures do mean a little more care has to be taken when packing – if you’re struggling to think of the essentials, check out this list.

Hiking Socks

Thick, well-made socks will keep your feet warm, dry, and comfortable. It can be worth taking several more pairs than you need, so that you can wear clean, dry pairs at night in your accommodation – in the mountains, even luxury stays can be chilly in the autumnal evenings.

Waterproof Layer

As well as a warm, thick coat to keep out the chill, don’t forget a high-quality, light waterproof over layer. Even if rain isn’t forecast for your hike, morning mists can cling to clothing and soak through, so it’s worth having a waterproof layer to pull over you.

Ear Muffs

If anything is going to ruin a hike, it will be the cold wind whistling in and causing your ears to ache. Even a small amount of wind can cause this problem, so if you’re climbing up high make sure you bring something to securely fit over your ears.
