While traveling through Europe, you’ll most likely encounter tourist scams that aim to get your money. The scams can vary from country to country, but there are a few common ones that you’ll probably be facing regardless of which part of Europe you find yourself in.

Charity Scams

One of the most popular scams in all major tourist locations in Europe is a charity scam. You’ll get approached by an individual who’ll ask you to spare a small amount for some cause. They will have accreditation and hold a piece of paper where they write the names of benefactors. You should politely decline, as it is most likely a well-organized group of scammers that are trying to take advantage of your sympathy. If you really want to help, research the organization online and then make a donation through the web if it’s legit.

Buddhist Monks Scam

You might be surprised to see quite a few Buddhist monks in Europe. But no, they have not come from Nepal to see Rome or Paris. Instead, they are probably scammers who will try to take advantage of you. Their most common method is to slip a “friendship bracelet” on your hand, pretending they are free. However, once you accept it, they will ask you to pay for it.

“Accidental” Spill

This happens all over the world, and Europe is no different. A person will bump into you and spill something on your clothes. They will dramatically apologize while trying to clean you up. Simply refuse and continue walking, since their friend is nearby waiting for a chance to steal your wallet and other valuables.

If you’re gearing up for your first trip to Europe, forget these misconceptions!

Weather

A lot of people think that just because Europe is a small continent that the weather is the same across the board, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. It even varies within each country! For example, the northern parts of Spain never really get that warm in the summer, while Paris can be in the 90s in July but drop down to being in the 50s at night in August.

Packing

Whenever you go on a European adventure, it’s tempting to bring a lot of different outfits to give you options. But, if you want to be like real Europeans, bring little clothes that you can re-wear! Europeans are all about efficiency and you’ll see that they can travel for a long while even with small suitcases.

Partying

There are some places like Spain where people party at all hours of the night often. However, a lot of places like Dublin, London, Amsterdam, and more, all close their bars and even clubs pretty early. So if you want to have a raging night, check out the opening hours of where you want to go so you’re not shocked when they turn the lights on early!
