“Dark tourism” is a type of tourism that interests many who are intrigued by the darker, creepier, or weirder things in life. It involves visiting spots where disasters happened, where risky or weird things take place, and occasionally even putting one’s self at risk. If that’s something you enjoy, here are some of the craziest spots you can visit.

Museo De Las Momias, Mexico

This museum with the world’s largest collection of naturally-created mummies on display is in Guanajuato, Mexico. Decades ago, local laws resulted in the exhuming of hundreds of bodies which, upon exhumation, were discovered to have been naturally mummified due to the arid climate. Many of the most well-preserved are now on display behind glass at this museum.

Chernobyl, Ukraine

Most people, at some point in their lives, have heard of the disastrous nuclear power explosion at Chernobyl which sent out waves of intense radiation, causing rampant death and illness and creating international fear of nuclear power. Well, it’s been decades since then, and the radiation has finally mostly dissipated … which means the site is now open to tours.

Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic

In Kutna Hora in the CR, there’s an ossuary (which is basically a storage site for bones) that is decorated with thousands of skeletons. Unfortunately photography there is no longer allowed, but you can still go see it for yourself if you love the macabre.
