If you’re planning a vacation to the Caribbean, don’t skip the island of Curacao. Here are a few reasons why this stunning island should be your next Caribbean destination, besides its incredible beaches.

Curaçao Has A Diverse Cultural Heritage

Curaçao was originally settled by the Arawaks nearly 6000 years ago. In the 16th century, the island came under Spanish rule, but it was soon abandoned. A century later, large numbers of Jewish refugees settled in Curaçao to escape the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. Finally, the island was claimed by the Dutch in 1815. Today, Curaçao exists as an independent state, but the diverse cultural influences are felt in the country’s music and food scene.

It’s Full of Art

Walking around Willemstad, the island’s capital, you are sure to see many colorful murals across the buildings, especially in the Otrobanda and Pietermaai neighborhoods. Curaçao’s art scene also thrives in a few museums and galleries. To see the largest collection of works by local artists, check out Gallery Alma Blou.

The Historic Downtown of Willemstad

Willemstad’s downtown is declared a Unesco World Heritage site. It is filled with colorful Dutch colonial buildings, creating a mix of European and tropical atmosphere. Take some time to wander around the city and see its inviting bars, and the buzzing floating market.
