Any traveler who has flown from North America to Japan, Australia, or any other far off destination knows it can be difficult to make a 10+ hour flight fly by. There are only so many movies you can watch, or time spent walking up and down the aisles. Here are some ideas to make your time go by more quickly.

Study a Language

If you’re going to a country where they don’t speak your native language, then it’s a good idea to memorize a couple of key phrases. While you’re waiting to arrive at your destination, use an app like Duolingo or Memrise to learn some key phrases. This will help you ask for directions, or where the closest bathroom is.

Work On a Craft

There are a lot of great crafts you can do if you like art. Bring a sketch pad and a set of pencils. You can sketch out different items on the plane, or passengers around you. If you like knitting or needlepoint you can bring your gear and knit a scarf or a hat.

Play A Game

Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit had the world falling in love with chess again. Bring a travel board of your favorite game like chess or checkers, and ask your travel companion if they want to play a few games. If you’re flying solo, this can be a nice way to get to know the passenger next to you.
