]]>Located just 14 kilometers west of Tangier, the Caves of Hercules became a popular tourist spot thanks to their uniquely-shaped sea opening. It’s known by the nickname “The Map of Africa” because it looks just like the outline of this continent.
It’s believed that Phoenicians created this sea opening, but that’s just one of many myths connected to this mysterious cave. Legend has it that the macaque monkeys reached the Rock of Gibraltar from Morocco through the cave, thanks to a 24 kilometer-long tunnel that connects them.
The Caves of Hercules were named after the Roman god Hercules for a reason, and that brings us to another centuries-old tale. It’s believed that he spent some time sleeping in the cave on his way to get golden apples from the Hesperides Garden.
A day trip to the caves will usually include a trip to Tangier and includes Cap Spartel as well.
