]]>While there are plenty of these to see throughout the German territory, one of the best ones to anyone who likes castles or finds themself in the area is Wartburg, located in Eisenach, Thuringia.
Located in the middle of the country and in a mountainous region known as the Thuringian Forest, the Wartburg was constructed at the end of the 11th century and still stands to this day.
Located on top of a promenade that towers 1,350 feet above the town in which it is located, this impressive structure was originally built as a home and a territorial marker by the Thuringian Count of Schauenburg, Louis the Springer.
The noble, Romanesque building served as an imposing location for kings and queens to live and important meetings to be held under several different kingdoms and administrations. One of the building’s most interesting stories was how it served as a refuge for Martin Luther in the 1500s as he tried to escape persecution from Catholics and translated the Bible to German.
The castle, its towers, and its gorgeous great hall can now be visited by tourists who marvel at this fascinating site and its incredible history. Be sure to visit if you get the chance!

]]>Perhaps the easiest one to visit first is the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Built in the 18th century, its magnificent red brick walls were rebuilt after bomb damage in World War II.
Said to be haunted by a woman in white walking the castle mourning her beloved, this castle should be on every thrill seekers list.
Moszna Castle has an astonishing 99 spires and is located in the beautiful Upper Silesia region of Poland. Built in the 17th century, it has opulent Baroque and Gothic architecture.
The quaint turrets and angular walls of Czocha castle have become something of a center for Harry Potter fans. It holds a number of “wizard” tournaments throughout the year and hosts a lot of wizard role-playing events.
The crumbling walls of this ancient castle are said to have seen the practice of black magic in bygone days. If you get there early, you might even have the whole place to yourself.
