The southernmost region in the country of Brazil is Rio Grande do Sul, the home to more than 11 million people and a land that doesn’t quite fit in with the most common stereotypes about the largest South American country.

In fact, you will probably be shocked as a visitor that you can see these three things in Rio Grande do Sul!

A Wine Region

You probably don’t associate wine-making with Brazil, but there is, in fact, an important wine region in Rio Grande do Sul. Vale dos Vinhedos is a region located in the Gaucho Highlands region of the state where a growing number of vineyards produce wines like Merlots and Chardonnays.

An Old German Settlement

The majority of Rio Grande do Sul’s population is of European origin, and a surprisingly high number of Germans settled here in the 20th century. You can discover this heritage in Gramado, a tourist-oriented city that features German architecture, restaurants, and the Mini Mundo Park.

Huge Canyons

The mountainous terrain of Rio Grande do Sul is also the home of a collection of impressive canyons such as Itaimbezinho, Fortaleza, and Malacara. Waterfalls and rushing rivers are found in these forested environments that you can hike in to discover.

The world’s 3 biggest canyons are actually quite accessible. This comes as a surprise to many, as it would seem like big canyons would be in far off deserts or jungles that are hard to get to. While they aren’t the deepest or longest these are the 3 canyons that are widely considered to be the biggest in the world:

Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA

The Grand Canyon is the most famous canyon in the world and is also considered the biggest. With over 5 million visitors a year, it is the second most visited National Park in America behind the Smoky Mountains.

There are many ways to experience this wonder of the world. Multi-day hikes into the canyon, helicopter tours, or rafting the Colorado River that carved out the canyon so many years ago are all great ways to explore the Grand Canyon.

No matter how long your visit is, watching the sunrise over the rim of the canyon is one of the coolest experiences in the world and is a must-see!

Fish River Canyon, Namibia, Africa

The second biggest canyon is also not a disappointment and is worth the trip if you ever find yourself in Southern Africa. While it is similar to the Grand Canyon in the sense that it is a desert, it has a unique shape and habitat.

While there are no day hikes allowed in the canyon, there are great views and trails along the rim. The popular Canyon Hike is open from April to September and can be done with a group in 4-8 days depending on how quick and far the group is going.

Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

Located in the northeast section of South Africa, Blyde River Canyon is very close to Kruger National Park and a 5-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Known as the “greenest canyon in the world”, the views here are nothing like the first two. Although it is not close to as big, the views, wildlife, and colors make this canyon one of the hidden treasures of Africa. Waterfalls and rivers line the hiking trails and you will forget that you are in one of the biggest canyons in the world as you pass nature at its finest.

We are all well aware of the Colorado River and we know that is has the deepest canyon in the world, but, what about the second deepest canyon in the world and certainly the deepest in Europe?

Well, you can find this canyon at the Tara River in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is 1300 meters deep and 149km long. This canyon is certainly an exciting destination, which is still waiting to be fully explored.

Tara River, along with the Piva River, form the Drina River. Throughout the river, the water is safe to drink, and it is the freshest cup of water you will ever taste. Most of the Tara River (including its canyon) is under UNESCO protection.

When here, you can spend your day walking around and enjoy the beautiful nature. You can also hike, have a picnic or bike. Still, the best and most famous activity to do on the Tara River is rafting. Tourists and sports enthusiasts come from all over the world just to raft here.  You can do it by yourself, join a team, or take rafting lessons. Any choice you make will be the right one, and the effort you put in will be worth when rafting along the most breath-taking sceneries all around you.
