Imagine walking the same streets that pharaohs once did. In Cairo, history is embedded in the very fabric of the city. The city is a treasure trove for anyone with a curiosity for the past, and here are three historical destinations you simply can’t miss.

The Pyramids of Giza

No visit to Cairo is complete without a trip to the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Located just outside Cairo, the complex includes the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. These pyramids are architectural marvels, showcasing the incredible engineering skills of the ancient Egyptians.

The Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum is one of the world’s most important repositories of ancient artifacts. The highlights of the museum include the treasures of Tutankhamun and mummies of the pharaohs. Plus, countless statues, jewels, and artifacts tell the story of Egypt’s fascinating past.

Islamic Cairo

The historic area of Islamic Cairo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers a deep dive into the Islamic era of Egypt. You can explore ancient mosques, madrasas, hammams, and fountains. Don’t miss the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Al-Azhar Mosque.

The streets of Cairo are filled with staple street foods that you have to try during your visit to Egypt, but if you’re looking for a relaxing spot with light dishes and a modern vibe, Qahwa is the place where you should be.

You won’t struggle to find one of these restaurants during your visit to Cairo since they expanded all over the city. Arkan Plaza, Sheikh Zayed Campus, Tivoli Dome, and Heliopolis are only some of the locations where this café is available.

Qahwa is the Arabic word for coffee, so it’s not hard to guess what the main treat on their menu is. You can take a pick between American and Arabic-style beverages, or opt for one of many other varieties they have in store, such as snickers mocha or crème espresso.

You can also indulge your cravings by trying one of the many tasty treats they have in store. Qahwa is a popular breakfast and brunch spot, but nothing compares to their desserts – whole cakes and signature melting dessert are some of their best treats and they’re just as delicious as they sound!

Egypt is a country that the world has to thank for so many reasons, from inventing the basis for an alphabet, creating the first vases, even down to dental hygiene. Visiting its capital, Cairo, is the best way to celebrate the robust history of the country, paired with modern amenities and adventures. Going to Cairo is an experience unlike any other city in the world, so if you’re looking for a vacation that is truly unique, Cairo is the place for you.

What to Do

Everyone knows about the famous pyramids in Giza, as well as the Sphinx, but what people don’t realize is that they’re only a short drive away from Cairo! In just about 30 minutes, you can go from the urban sprawl some of the most impressive moments in the world. If you’re worried about crowds, you can also go to see the pyramids at night which is a whole nother experience in and of itself. So check off one of the 7 wonders of the world during your trip!

The Egyptian Museum is another must-see place in Cairo. This museum has over 12,000 pieces of Egyptian antiquities, including some mummies belonging to Egyptian royalty. It is really amazing to see the mummies and imagine what life must have been like at that time.

Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As was the first mosque to be built on the continent of Africa in 641-642 AD, so it is definitely worth a visit. Of course, the original structure is not standing today, but to know that the same land has been used for more than 12 centuries is pretty spectacular.

The Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar is the oldest open-air market in all of the Middle East, so you can’t miss it. This is a great market to pick up gifts for friends at home, especially for those who love to cook since there is an array of spices. However, you have to be aware that during the weekends it gets incredibly crowded, so just keep that in mind. Also, within the market are some cafes where you can enjoy traditional Arabic drinks.

Since Cairo is located right on the Nile river, take advantage of it by going on a felucca, or small sailboat, ride! This is a great way to relax after a long day of touring and allows you to see the city in a whole new light.

What to Eat

Egyptian food can be a bit heavy at times, but there are some dishes that you absolutely need to try while you’re in Cairo. The most famous dish in the city is called koshary, and is a combination of many pulses like lentils and chickpeas, with a tomato sauce as well as rice and macaroni. This poor man’s meal will definitely fill you up, so be sure to have an appetite before you try it!

Ful mudamas is another Egyptian staple street food that is normally eaten for breakfast. It is a dish made from fava beans and is also a vegan dish! Fava beans are very popular in Egyptian cuisine so it’s essential to try it.
