Bristol is a great city for students and families alike, with much to offer in terms of culture and green spaces. It’s no wonder then that it has consistently won the Sunday Times’ ‘Best Place to Live’ award.

Art and Architecture

Banksy is one of Bristol’s most famous artists and his works can be found across Bristol. He has contributed to a culture of abundant graffiti in Bristol which sets it apart from most other cities. There are also fantastic art exhibitions such as the Arnolfini and Spike Island, as well as museums such as the M Shed and Bristol Museum which have enough to keep you coming back. Bristol is also famous for its architecture, with Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain absolute must-sees for anyone with an interest in engineering.

Parks and Green Spaces

Bristol is one of the greenest cities in the UK and was named the European Green Capital in 2015 for its abundance of green spaces. In the center, there is Castle Park which has a great view of the river, and Brandon Hill Park with its incredible vistas across Bristol. On the outskirts, there is Eastville Park, which has a huge lake and canal network, Blaise Castle with a gorge walk, and Ashton Court, which is a large estate with great views across Bristol where a lot of hot air balloons are launched. Bristol has far too many parks to explore in a day, so you’ll have to keep coming back.

Bristol is a city in the south-west of the UK that has plenty to offer the fleeting visitor as well as the committed traveller. If you’re just passing through, or can only spare a day in this lovely city, check out this guide on how to spend 24 hours in the UK’s ‘rebel city’.

Morning: Head To Pinkman’s Bakery

Situated centrally within Bristol, Pinkman’s Bakery has won many awards for its delicious sweet and savory treats. It’s particularly famous for its pizzas and filled doughnuts (get a doughtnut to take away if you can’t manage both at once).

Explore St Nick’s Market

This sprawling market space is a great place to pick up trinkets, vintage clothing, jewellry, or artworks. There is also a hot street food section, so head there is you fancy fresh falafel, soup, curry or cous cous.

Visit the Suspension Bridge

Bristol’s famous suspension bridge, designed by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is a beautiful spot and you can look out over the city from here. The area around the bridge is green parkland, so bring a book or a bite to eat if it’s warm enough to sit out.

Eat At Wapping Wharf

These recycled shipping containers now host some of the best eateries in the city. You can choose from multiple cuisines, so whether you fancy Mexican, American, Chinese, Spanish or French food, this little pods should have you covered. Most of these restaurants are fairly cheap, too, so you should have enough money left to find one of Bristol’s cool bars and finish your visit off with a nightcap.

Bristol is a fun city to visit and explore, and you could easily spend up to a week getting to know all of its cool and creative quarters. However, if you’re pressed for time this article offers some of the highlights which can’t be missed.
