While Transylvania, Romania has become known for its association with Dracula, werewolves, fantasies, and fairytales, the region has some of Europe’s most spectacular and oldest castles and mansions. If the medieval towns weren’t reason enough to visit the Transylvania, these castles are and some of them are even spooky. Here are three you need to check out.

Bran Castle

Some claim that this castle inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula and it continues to be surrounded by myth and magic. Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad Dracula, one of the most important rulers in Wallachian history, passed through Bran Castle in 1459 to settle a conflict over customs taxes.

Peles Castle

This large and gorgeous castle nestled in the mountain countryside was the world’s first castle powered by energy using its own power plant. Peles Castle has three tours that show the levels of the castle and the rooms are full of lavish decor including silk rugs, Murano glass, marble, and walnut decor.

Cantacuzino Castle

Completed in 1911 under the request of Prince George Grigore Cantacuzinol, Cantacuzino Castle is located in the mountain resort Busteni. It’s perfect for destination weddings and grand events and the traditional Romanian cuisine is to die for.

Dracula’s castle is the home of Irish author Bram Stoker’s fictional Transylvanian Count character called Dracula. The spooky castle, mentioned and seen so many times in movies and TV shows, is real-life “Bran castle.” Thanks to Stoker and his book, Romania and its castle, situated on a cliff at an elevation of 762 meters (2500 feet), surrounded by valleys and hills became a major tourist destination among tourists worldwide.

According to historical evidence, the Bran castle wasn’t ever owned by Vlad Tepes aka the 15th-century prince Dracula. It was in the property of the Saxons, Dracula’s biggest and worst enemies. Later, he attacked the Saxons and took over the castle.

Queen Marie’s heart

In the past, Bran castle wasn’t a castle at all. It was a border fortress on the Transylvanian and Wallachian border. For a long period of time, after Transylvania was united with the rest of Romania in 1920, it was abandoned. Then, Queen Marie arrived. She loved her castle so much, that she mentioned in her will that when she dies she wants her heart to be removed from her body and buried next to the castle. Her will was fulfilled. On the south-west side of the castle, at the edge of the forest, there is the urn with Queen Marie’s heart.

The secret passage

The secret passage was an escape tunnel built inside the fireplace wall and was used in case of emergency. It used to connect the first floor with the third floor.

The mysterious well

The well in Bran’s castle was 18 meters (60 feet) deep. However, water pumping wasn’t its purpose. Just before the water level, they build a secret room where they’ve had hidden all the treasures.
