Due to its harsh weather conditions, Ethiopia isn’t one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations, but that’s not stopping it from being home to many natural wonders you can’t find anywhere else—including these three.

Erta Ale

Ethiopia is home to the world’s longest existing lava lake, located on the grounds of the country’s most active volcano—Erta Ale. Often described as the “gateway to hell”, this smoking volcanic terrain is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, but that’s not stopping local companies from offering tours in the area that include military escort.

Blue Nile Falls

Just like many other African countries, Ethiopia is home to a beautiful waterfall that will take your breath away. Blue Nile Falls consists of four cascading streams and it’s 52 meters high. It’s also known by the nickname Tis Abay, which can be translated as “great smoke”.

Dallol

With an average annual temperature of around 35°C, Dallol is often described as the hottest place on the planet. That’s also the reason why it’s one of the most remote places on Earth, but its rusty orange and green salt formations will still leave you speechless.
