If you’re a beginning mountaineer, there are quite a few gorgeous mountains under 14,000 feet to get you started for your first big climb. Here are 3 such beginner-friendly peaks first-timers can conquer.

Pikes Peak, Colorado

At a height of 14,115, Pikes Peak in Colorado is known as one of the easiest and most accessible mountains for beginner climbers. There is a 13.5-mile trail leading you up 6,400 feet to the summit. One thing to remember before taking on Pikes Peak is to take a water purifier with you. The water along the trail must be sanitized before drinking.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

You may be surprised this mountain is on the list, considering it’s almost hitting the 20,000-foot mark. But altitude is the greatest challenge you’ll face hiking up this mountain. You can complete the journey without setting food in ice or snow. A guide is required and it can take up to a week to reach the summit, but you will be able to sit you have climbed Africa’s highest peak.

Mount Elbrus, Russia

At 18,510 feet Mount Elbrus is Europe’s highest peak. Do note that this mountain demands strength and stamina to reach the summit, and thin air will be a challenge for any climber, whether a beginner or more advanced.
