Around the world, Americans have a reputation for being rude and loud, which is perhaps due to how they act when traveling to foreign countries. Before traveling to new countries, it’s important to get familiar with the customs and when traveling in Asia, these etiquette tips will make your vacation more enjoyable.

Dress Respectfully

In general, Asian cultures dress more modestly than Americans and low-cut tops and short skirts won’t be seen well.

Consider Personal Space

Personal space and body contact differs in Asian cultures from Western ones. Like in India, men don’t touch women in public as a sign of respect. In general, allow about an arm-length space between yourself and others.

Don’t Be Critical

In China, it’s common for there to be a ton of food and it’s polite to try everything. If you don’t like something it’s really rude to critique the dishes.

Be Formal

In Asia it’s rude to greet new acquaintances by their first name. Instead address people by Mr., Mrs., or Miss and their family names.

Bring a Gift

When you’re invited to someone’s home, it’s customary to bring a gift for the host. Items from your country are the best ones, so pack some chocolates or wine in your suitcase.
