The Appalachian Trail is a hiker’s paradise. The trail spans approximately 2,200 miles across 14 states in the eastern United States. Here are a few fun facts about this iconic trail that might just get you to lace up your hiking boots and hit the path.

An Iconic Thru-Hike Challenge

Many avid hikers dream of completing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT). This epic thru-hike can take five to seven months, challenging hikers both physically and mentally. Completing it is a badge of honor. It also builds a camaraderie among those who’ve conquered its entirety.

Trail Magic and Community Spirit

One of the AT’s most special aspects is the concept of “trail magic.” Strangers, known as “trail angels,” often provide unexpected acts of kindness to hikers, like offering food, supplies, or even a place to rest. This creates a tight-knit community spirit among hikers. Plus it creates lasting memories and friendships.

Shelters and Scenic Spots

Throughout the trail, hikers come across over 250 shelters and numerous scenic viewpoints. These shelters, spaced about a day’s hike apart are a place to rest, cook, and socialize. Meanwhile, breathtaking spots like McAfee Knob and Clingmans Dome are panoramic views that reward the trek’s challenges.

For example, there’s a new app that lets you hike the Appalachian Trail from any point in the world and we think that’s a great way for people who live too far away to experience it.

While the Appalachian Trail is usually full in the spring, this year was different. Due to social distancing measures and orders to stay home, many people were unable to visit their favorite hiking trail.

Walk the Distance is a new app that’s trying to make the Appalachian Trail more accessible. It works by using the pedometer on your phone to track your steps. It then adds those steps day by day until you walk the entire length of the Appalachian Trail—2,200 miles or 3,500 kilometers.

Everything counts, even taking your dog on a short walk. As you do your daily walks, the app will let you know the milestones you’ve hit.

The app also has a social aspect which means that you can use it to share your virtual hiking experience with friends. Using Google Maps graphics, the app shows an icon with your profile picture pinned in the place on the trail that you’ve reached based on the step count.
