Charleston, South Carolina is without a doubt one of the United States’ trendiest travel destinations. This charming coastal town has a wealth of historical sites, friendly people, and quirky things to do.

Here are three places that you must see while in Charleston.

Fort Sumter National Monument

The American Civil War started when the Confederate Army launched an attack on this sea fort, which was built for the War of 1812. Now, the site is a historical monument whose fascinating history can be seen by visitors with their own eyes.

Rainbow Row

In the heart of Charleston’s historic district, Georgian Row Houses which date back to the 18th century and are colorfully and eye-catchingly painted. Given the name “Rainbow Row” due to their striking appearance, this is a must-see stretch of Charleston.

Charleston City Market

Built in 1841, this historic market in the heart of Charleston is still used by vendors who hawk all kinds of local goods on a day to day basis. From Gullah sweetgrass baskets to local produce and other food products, you’re sure to find something to buy here.

Despite its reputation as a rural place, the reality of the American South is that there are tons of cities to enjoy and visit. Perhaps the soul of the South is best captured in its small cities, which combine rural traditions with the comforts and architecture of population centers.

Here are three of the American South’s most charming small cities that you definitely have to add to your must-visit list.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is a perfect representation of what the South has to offer. Colonial-era homes and old plantations stand alongside barbecue and seafood joints where the aesthetic might be barebones, but the food is unbeatable. Take a stroll by the palms along the Atlantic and take in a deep breath: you’re in paradise.

Asheville, North Carolina

This mountain hamlet has long been known as an outlet for creativity and expression. From the theatres and art galleries to the dozens of craft breweries that line its streets, Asheville is quirky, fun, and one-of-a-kind. Everyone feels at home and welcome here.

Charlottesville, Virginia

My favorite college town in the South is Charlottesville, the city which hosts the University of Virginia. Its scenic location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its rich history, including Thomas Jefferson’s 18th century home, gives Charlottesville plenty to see and appreciate.

Knoxville is situated in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, giving the city a gorgeous mountain background. Fall might be the best time to visit the city, when the trees’ leaves turn fiery reds and oranges.

Visitors to Knoxville will love the downtown and Old City area. Here, travelers can leisurely stroll around the pedestrian-only Market Square. It’s full of local shops with quirky artisan crafts as well as small restaurants such as Stock and Barrel. This burger joint is considered one of the top hamburger restaurants in the United States.

If you’re looking for views in Knoxville, you have to take a ride to the top of the Sunsphere. Constructed for the 1982 World’s Fair, this strange golden orb is the symbol of the city.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to do in Knoxville. A leisurely stroll along the Tennessee River provides visitors with a view of one of America’s biggest rivers.

Also, be sure to check out Ijams Nature Center. An urban oasis, this park has several trails and places to explore the East Tennessee wilderness.

Knoxville is a must-see for anyone looking to check out an authentic Southern city. Don’t miss out!

Louisville, Kentucky isn’t, in fact, the capital of Kentucky, but being the largest city in the state gives it the upper hand on cultural activities and sites, but still manages to maintain the quirky southern charm of a small town. Louisville is a great blend of natural beauty, interesting historical architecture, and an incredible food and drinks scene. If you’re looking for a place to visit that is slightly off the beaten track but super fun, you’ll love Louisville.

What to Do

If you’re looking for an art scene in Louisville, head over to the downtown area for some great choices. The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is a free museum that has two floors of local and international artists that feature all sorts of different types of art and crafts, such as textiles, mosaics, pottery, and more.

Just down the street is 21c, a hotel that also boast a fabulous gallery in it’s lobby and in the downstairs space. The works rotate fairly frequently, and you can see everything from modern paintings and photographs, to murals done by artists like Kehinde Wiley, the artist who recently did Barack Obama’s portrait.

If you love whiskey, you’ve come to the right place. Kentucky is the birthplace of bourbon, and just within Louisville there are several large and small distilleries. From Jim Beam to Evan Williams and Heaven Hill, you can go on tours and do lots of samplings throughout the cities. There are also bourbon only bars where you can do tastings of bourbon.

If you want to escape the city for a while and enjoy the beautiful Ohio River, go to the Big Four Bridge which is a completely pedestrian bridge that connects Louisville with neighboring Indiana! It is about a mile long and you can occasionally hear music being played through the speakers. Once you cross over the bridge and enter Indiana, you will be greeted by the small town of Jeffersonville, which has many cute pubs, ice cream shops, and a very famous candy shop called Schimpffs. The shop has actually been open since 1891, so you have to go.

What To Eat

Kentucky is obviously known for their fried chicken, and there is one place that never fails to deliver. Big Momma’s Soul Kitchen is a Louisville institution where the menu changes daily, but you can always be sure to find their famous fried chicken along with their perfected southern classics like collard greens, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and more. There isn’t any seating inside but you cannot miss out on this inexpensive flavor bomb of a dive.

Another Louisville staple to try is a dish called the hot brown that was actually created in the city in the 1920s at the Brown Hotel. The dish is a hot open-faced sandwich that is made with turkey, bacon, and smothered in cheesey bechamel sauce and baked until the cheese is super bubbly. You can find them in most places, but The Cafe restaurant has a great one.

Although not traditionally southern, Mayan Cafe is another Louisville staple that represents the Latino community of the city. This restaurant serves up farm to table Latin dishes that are super flavorful and delicious. They also have a great lunch menu, so check them out!
