]]>The wildlife refuge park includes refuge ponds for some of the tens of thousands of geese, spoonbills, and egrets who either live or pass through the area. Another species that finds refuge in Brazoria is alligators, including a 12-foot gator once sighted, that dig their holes in the area. Quite an experience.
Formerly known as Lake Jackson, the place got its new nickname after, in 2003, the partial skeleton of a 14-foot high mammoth was excavated from the lake. After more archeological artifacts were found in the lake it was converted to a scuba diving site for those interested in checking out the excavations.
The area has a long strip of visitors-friendly beach, inviting tourists and locals to bathe, swim, camp, and even go fishing. Make sure to follow the rules and the instructions to keep everyone healthy and leave the sites clean behind you.
