History, spirituality, and gorgeous scenery. That’s a pretty apt way to sun up Sri Lanka. The South Asian country is not the first on many people’s bucket lists, but these are some reasons why it deserves a rightful spot.

Colombo

The capital city of Sri Lanka draws on elements of its Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial past. Here you can visit museums and markets, as well as indulge in Sri Lankan cuisine. Sample favorites like curry and rice, and hoppers. Lovers of the sport should check out the Cricket Club Café, and definitely have a cup of Ceylon tea.

The Sigiriya

Sri Lanka has a long history involving many kings. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa usurped his father King Dhatusena, taking his place on the throne. As he was an illegitimate child, Kashyapa was not the rightful heir and feared that his half-brother would return to take the crown. So what did Kashyapa do? He built an elaborate fortress. The Sigiriya, also known as the Lion’s Rock, features some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world, as well as the ruins of the palace and citadel that Kashyapa built.

Temple of the Tooth

As legend goes, before the body of Buddha was cremated, one of his teeth was saved. The relic is now housed in Kandy, in what is appropriately known as the Temple of the Tooth. Buddhists from around the world come here to pray, and between the months of July and August, a colorful procession is held called Kandy Esala Perahera.

Have you ever thought about visiting Porto, Portugal? The hilly city is located on the Douro River, with bright patterned tiles covering buildings on every street. It’s a mix of history and natural beauty, and, of course, delicious Port wine. Let’s take a closer look at why this city deserves a visit.

The Architecture

Porto’s architecture tells stories of Roman, Medieval, and Baroque periods seamlessly intertwined with modern design. One of the most notable sites is the São Bento Railway Station, adorned with 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting historical Portuguese scenes.

The Cuisine

Porto is the birthplace of Port wine, a fortified wine that has been produced exclusively in the Douro Valley for over 250 years. You can even explore local distilleries for an up-close look. On the culinary front, check out the ‘Cachorrinho,’ a local fast food that consists of a spicy sausage served in a crispy bread roll with cheese and special sauce.

The Art and Culture

Porto’s art scene is as textured as its history. The city is home to several street art murals that transform ordinary walls into canvases displaying vibrant, thought-provoking works. Moreover, the Serralves Foundation regularly curates exhibitions featuring international contemporary artists, connecting Porto to global art movements.

Festivals are one of the best things to experience. Spending time outside with great people, and enjoying good music, food, and other entertainment is amazing and many people choose to do this each year instead of a classic vacation abroad. However, camping is not always the best, and being unprepared can cause many issues. Here are some tips to help you out when packing for your next festival.

Always Bring Warm Clothes

You may well have checked the weather forecast and seen that it’s due to be hot and sunny the whole time you’re there. However, weather can always change, and even if it is super hot then often in the evenings and nighttime the temperature can drop suddenly.

Use Smaller Compartments in Your Bag

There’s nothing worse than being in a hot tent and having to rummage through a big bag to find something you need. If you have smaller bags within your bag and work out some kind of system then it will be much easier to find things and you can save lots of time and energy.

Bring Spare Underwear

Due to the nature of festivals, you’ll likely end up getting yourself and your belongings dirty or wet at some point, so having spare socks and underwear to rely on in these moments is a lifesaver.

Traveling solo can be a transformative and enriching experience, offering the freedom to explore new destinations on your own terms. Whether you’re a seasoned solo traveler or embarking on your first solo adventure, here are three essential tips to make the most of your journey.

Embrace Flexibility and Spontaneity

One of the greatest advantages of solo travel is the freedom to follow your instincts and change plans at a moment’s notice. Embrace spontaneity by allowing yourself to wander off the beaten path, discover hidden gems, and interact with locals. Keep your itinerary flexible, leaving room for unexpected adventures and serendipitous encounters. Whether it’s joining a group tour, trying new cuisines, or simply getting lost in a new city, embracing flexibility will enhance your solo travel experience and open doors to unforgettable moments.

Prioritize Safety and Awareness

While solo travel offers unparalleled freedom, it’s essential to prioritize your safety and well-being. Before embarking on your journey, research your destination thoroughly, familiarizing yourself with local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar or crowded areas. Trust your instincts and avoid risky situations, such as walking alone late at night or accepting drinks from strangers. Keep important documents and valuables secure, and consider sharing your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member. By prioritizing safety and awareness, you can enjoy your solo adventure with peace of mind.

Connect With Other Travelers

Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to be alone. Take advantage of opportunities to connect with fellow travelers and locals, whether it’s striking up a conversation in a hostel common area, joining a guided tour, or participating in a local cultural activity. Use social media platforms or travel forums to connect with like-minded individuals and seek recommendations from experienced solo travelers. Engaging with others not only provides valuable insights and companionship but also enriches your travel experience by fostering meaningful connections and cultural exchange.

Taking an extended break from the daily grind is like pressing the refresh button on your life’s browser. And while the idea of jetting off into the sunset for weeks on end might raise some eyebrows, the payoffs are more than just a tan and a suitcase full of souvenirs. Let’s unpack the surprisingly rich rewards of taking a long vacation.

Deep Rest and Recovery

Short breaks are great for a quick recharge, but they barely scratch the surface when it comes to truly unwinding. Long vacations allow your body and mind to fully recover from the stresses of work and daily life. It’s about giving yourself the time to engage in restorative activities.

Long-Term Health Benefits

The health benefits of taking a vacation extend beyond immediate relaxation. Studies suggest that those who take regular vacations have a lower risk of heart disease, stress, and depression. The cumulative effect of annual long vacations can contribute significantly to your overall physical and mental well-being.

A Shift in Perspective

Lastly, experiencing different cultures and ways of life can foster empathy, gratitude, and a broader understanding of the world. This shift in perspective can lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life, influencing your priorities and choices long after you return home.
